Abia State is divided into seventeen local governments areas (LGAs),
and three senatorial zones. These three (3) senatorial
districts are represented by three (3) duly elected Senators, eight (8)
members of the Federal House of Representatives, twenty four (24)
members of the State House of Assembly, Seventeen (17) Local Government
Chairmen and their Deputies, Three hundred and six (306) Councilors and
Thirty six (36) autonomous communities and traditional rulers otherwise
known as Ezes. Each of the seventeen LGAs in the state is headed by the
Local Government Chairman who is the Chief Executive Officer of the
local government. He is usually assisted by a Secretary, Supervisory
Councilors and Councilors. The administrative headquarters of the local
government area is located in one of the urban or semi urban areas
within the local government area. These are geared towards bringing
governance, development and participatory democracy nearer to the
people. The following are the seventeen (17) local government areas of
